I’m delighted to have had two images make it through to the Scottish Portrait Awards Long List Exhibition again this year. One each in the Fine Art and Richard Coward Scottish Portrait Award in Photography categories.
The portrait of Tom Brookes at The New York Times Climate Hub at COP26 was the headline story in Politico Europe on the day it was published last November. His kind and quiet demeanour hid well his outsized influence in the realm of client politics.
I had been hesitant to enter the long exposure image into the competition, even though the series has sold well, and I’m proud of it – long exposure shots can sometimes appear more of a parlor trick than fine art and I wasn’t sure it would be well-received. But it so reflects the mood and madness of that pandemic summer: Free and confined. Stifled and unscripted. A hanging question mark of when things would ever be normal again – whatever that means…
