With our evolved skin and our need to escape it.
With our desire to drown ourselves in the digital.
With our need to become something new.
Our time seems to have passed...
I wonder why it’s better than this flawed vessel.
Something etched with time, pain and wonder.
Will they be a perfectly-imperfect marvel?
As frail and as fallible?
As prone to all manner of ailments and illness,
and yet profoundly beautiful
in all of their infinite variations?
Will cotton on skin still matter?
The steam rising from a hot drink at first light?
Will they surge forward
or be lost to themselves?
What will the dawn shine upon
and will we recognize our own reflection?
about the exhibition
Based on an original short poem of the same name, The Last Of Our Kind features 30 fine art photographs of portraiture and form studies.
The project began a few years ago as a quiet meditation on our humanity as we begin to merge with technology.
More recently, it has also taken on a darker shadow by the appearance of covid 19, which has only served to amplify the projects' themes of frailty, and transience in a time of great change.
While the portfolio quietly asks the question outstanding of “what will we be when being human is no longer enough for us?”, it is at heart a simple portrait series that observes moments of innocence and introspection as we age, move, and grapple with mortality and evolution.
The show will take the form of a 4 week exhibition, held at the Glasgow Art Club and Gallery, and runs concurrently with the 2020 Scottish Portrait Awards, in which Garth also appears as a Long List Exhibitor and a Short List reserve artist.
The event is free of charge and available to all.
